The eyes are a window to our souls, but sometimes the effects of aging and the heaviness of excess skin on the upper eyelid can cause the eyelid to droop, obstruct vision, cause irritation, or impede that special someone’s ability to see into your sparkling eyes.
Those busy nights in the office and spendings hours upon hours on the computer or smartphone, leave our eyes feeling heavy and tired. Those constantly tired eyes can leave unsightly eye bags which are difficult to get rid of.
Dr Joseph Rizk has years of experience rejuvenating eyelids in Sydney. He’s helped many men and women restore the look of their eyes so that they not only function more comfortably but look clearer and younger too. If your droopy or puffy eyes are causing you problems, Dr Rizk can help you find the solution.
Eyelid surgery (known as “Blepharoplasty”) is a popular cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid to reduce drooping and reverse the signs of ageing.
The surgery removes skin and tissue from the lower eyelid to reduce puffiness and bags to rejuvenate the face. This type of cosmetic surgery can alter the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Either way, the aim is to improve the appearance of the area surrounding the eyes.
Sometimes, it’s not only about appearance though. Excess skin and puffiness can cause irritation, obstruct vision, and even promote infections around the eye. In these cases, eyelid surgery can address more than just cosmetic concerns — it’s about restoring your quality of life.
The goal of Blepharoplasty (eyelid) surgery is to create a natural-looking shape that compliments your face, and correct or eliminate any changes time has made to the appearance of your eyes that cause you problems. Blepharoplasty can alter:
Whether your droopy or puffy eyelids are causing you medical problems or just don’t reflect the vibrant energy you feel, Dr Rizk can help. Every procedure he performs is completely customised to your particular needs and desires.
If you suffer from any of the conditions mentioned above, you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery. Good candidates are non-smokers and generally have good health overall. They don't have any major health concerns like heart disease or diabetes and are free of any infections (these can interfere with the surgery and recovery processes).
Dr Rizk advocates the National Law and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) guidelines that any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
The best candidates fully understand the Blepharoplasty procedures and are aware of their potential benefits and limitations. They have realistic expectations for the results that can be achieved.
Because your procedure will be fully customised to your needs, your exact eyelid surgery plan may vary. Typical procedures last between one and three hours, but that will depend on your customised plan and the extent of the operation.
Blepharoplasty is usually done in Dr Rizk’s clinic which means you should be able to return home after your surgery. Still, Dr Rizk may employ general anesthesia leaving you disoriented or groggy after your procedure, so you should plan for a friend or family member to take you home and care for you during the first 24 hours post-operation. For upper eyelid procedures, Dr Rizk will make the incisions along the natural creases of your eyelids, and for lower eyelid operations, the incision will usually be made along the line of your eyelashes.
That way any scars that form will be hidden and allow for a more aesthetically pleasing result. Dr Rizk will then tighten the underlying muscles and tendons and remove or reposition any excess fat as needed. The skin will then be tightened over the reduced area and excess skin will be trimmed away. Dr Rizk will close the incisions with stitches or skin adhesive as appropriate and then treat and bandage your eyes to protect them and promote a full and proper recovery.
After your eyelid surgery procedure, you can expect tenderness and swelling on and around your eyelids for the first week or so. There also may be significant bruising or discoloration. Irritation and dry eyes are also common conditions encountered during recovery, but these can be addressed with ointments and/or eye drops.
Dr Rizk may give you medicine or prescribe certain medications to deal with the discomfort and combat the risk of infection, and he will give you instructions for properly caring for your eyes as they heal. After seven to 10 days, the swelling and bruising should subside, but it may be a month or so before your eyes feel “normal” again. This is natural and will be determined by your skin’s resilience and body’s overall condition.
During your recovery, make sure to use sunscreen on your face and around your eyes, and it may even be a good idea to wear dark sunglasses to protect your rejuvenated eyelids. Dr Rizk will schedule any follow-up visits as needed, but, if you experience any adverse side effects, you can contact Dr Rizk’s office at any time. If you have any serious or life-threatening complications, contact emergency medical services immediately.
You will notice a significant difference in the appearance of your eyes after the swelling and discoloration subside. If you were experiencing irritation or reduced vision because of your eyelids, these impacts will be greatly or even completely eliminated.
Overall sagging and puffiness will be gone and, in general, you should readily notice a much more youthful appearance and sparkle. While Dr Rizk fully expects you to experience excellent results, ongoing care of your eyes is vital to maintaining your younger-looking eyes. You should keep up with your skin care and sun protection regimen and overall health routine to sustain your most optimal results.
