Scar Correction Surgery

What is a good scar?

A mature scar is flat and usually slightly paler, but occasionally darker than the surrounding skin. It can sometimes be hidden in natural skin lines.

Can I change the way my scar looks?

Hypertrophic scarring and keloid formation are the result of excess collagen accumulation in a healing wound.

Is surgery the only option?

No it is not. Massage and silicone gel sheets can be used to soften and change the appearance of a scar, especially in the first 18 months. If a scar is a keloid or hypertrophic scar then treatment with a steroid may be used.

Dr Rizk advocates the National Law and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) guidelines that any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
