Perhaps you’ve always wanted to get a breast reduction, but are sceptical as to whether or not it would be worth the money, time, and effort? While your scepticism is valid, breast reduction surgery can have benefits for some women, as well as risks.

Wondering what exactly this means? Here are some of the possible benefits of breast reduction in Sydney.

The benefits of breast reduction

The possible benefits of reducing your breasts vary between individuals.

Breast reduction surgery:

Takes stress off the body

Many women with larger-than-average breasts suffer from chronic backache, shoulder ache, and neck ache. This is especially true if they have small frames or weak core muscles. Their breasts essentially act as weights which drag down the fronts of their bodies, causing poor posture over prolonged periods of time.

By removing some of the weight from the breasts of these women, many may experience relief from their pain, although results vary. They may also find it easier to practise good posture.

Makes exercise easier

For some women with large breasts, sports and exercise can be difficult, such as running, swinging a golf club, or lifting weights.

If you’re an avid exerciser and you have large breasts, a breast reduction may make exercise more comfortable.

Reduces skin irritation

Some women with large breasts suffer from extreme chafing in the area directly under their breasts. This comes as a result of their breasts rubbing back and forth throughout the day. In some cases, it can be extremely painful.

Reducing the size of the breasts may help with this. The smaller your breasts are, the less they will rub against your skin, and the less chafing they will cause.

Allows for easier breathing

Another possible benefit of breast reduction surgery is that it may allow for easier breathing. It may reduce sweat and heat buildup in the chest area, and may also allow you to physically breathe with more ease.

Studies show that the larger your breasts are, the more they can restrict your breathing. This is because they weigh down on the diaphragm, which can limit its expansion.

So, if you have large breasts, and you suffer from breathing problems, having the size of your breasts reduced may help with those breathing problems. Dr Rizk will assess this at your consultation.

Aesthetic reasons

While aesthetic preferences are certainly subjective, some women undergo breast reductions for aesthetic reasons, for example so that their breasts are more in proportion with their frame.

There’s nothing wrong with undergoing a breast surgery solely for aesthetic purposes.

What is breast reduction surgery?

Now that you understand the benefits of breast reduction surgery, perhaps you’re curious as to what exactly it entails? While we can’t give you a detailed explanation in this blog post, we can, at the very least, provide you with a summary.

There are two types of breast reduction surgeries: Inverted-T breast reduction and vertical breast reduction.

Inverted T breast reduction involves incisions around the areola, vertically below it and in the breast fold; skin, glandular and fatty tissue are removed. This surgery allows for the greatest amount of shaping and is best used in cases where large reductions must be made.

Vertical breast reduction is best used for cases when only small reductions are needed. This procedure includes two incisions on the breasts and generally results in shorter scars than an inverted T reduction.

Both of these surgeries involve the removal of fat tissue from the breast. However, an inverted T breast reduction allows for more fat tissue removal than does a vertical reduction.

All surgery carries risks, including scarring, changes in nipple sensation and possible effects on breastfeeding; Dr Rizk will discuss these with you at consultation. Results vary between individuals.

How much does a breast reduction cost?

Breast reduction surgery pricing varies based on the extent of the procedure and your individual treatment plan. The overall cost includes fees from multiple providers, including surgeon fees, assistant surgeon fees, and anaesthetist fees. Following your consultation, you will receive a transparent, written and itemised breakdown of the anticipated costs.

However, there's a possibility that your health insurance will cover at least some of the cost. If the surgery is deemed medically necessary, it could be covered.
