What is a Brow Lift?
A brow lift, sometimes called a forehead lift or browplasty, is a procedure that can reduce the deep wrinkles that can appear across your forehead and raise a low brow position.
Over the years, facial expressions can cause the skin of the forehead and eyebrow area to wrinkle and lose elasticity. Sun damage can add to these lines, and the pull of gravity over time can cause tissue laxity and a lower brow position.
As we age, our skin loses elasticity and one of the places that it's most noticeable is around the eye brows. In some people a lower brow position can make them appear tired or cross when they are not. Through incisions in the scalp or forehead, a brow lift repositions the forehead skin and underlying tissues to raise the brows and soften forehead lines.
What does a Brow Lift do?
Using the technique determined to be best for your situation, the surgeon is able to adjust the skin and underlying tissues that span the forehead. Excess skin can be removed if necessary.

Types of Brow Lifts

Traditional
Traditional forehead lifts involve making larger incisions that allow the skin and tissue to be repositioned. These methods are defined by where the incision is made:
- •Coronal — across the top of the head
- •Petrichial — along the hairline
- •Mid-brow — between the eyebrows
- •Direct — within the eyebrows
Endoscopic
With an endoscopic procedure, small incisions are made in several places around the forehead. A set of pencil-shaped tools are then used to access the structures under the skin and allow for repositioning and reshaping. This technique can result in fewer and smaller scars and typically requires less recovery time.
Your Procedure
The exact procedure you undergo will depend on the technique you and Dr Rizk choose. Brow lift is usually performed as a day procedure in an accredited facility.
First, you'll be positioned comfortably in your private room and placed under anesthesia. Once it has taken effect, Dr Rizk will perform the procedure as outlined in your customized surgery plan. Skin and tissue will be tightened, removed, and repaired. Finally, the incisions will be closed, and you'll be brought out of anaesthesia.

Your Recovery
Like your surgery plan, your recovery will be unique to you. During the first week, it will be important to rest and take care of your forehead as it heals. Initial recovery typically requires 10-14 days of downtime, but most patients are able to return to their regular daily routines after this time. Complete healing can take a few months.
Dr Rizk will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your forehead as it heals, including when you can resume exercise and other activities. He will also give you prescriptions for any medications for infection prevention and pain management that may be necessary.
Risks and possible complications
All surgery carries risks. Dr Rizk will discuss the risks that apply to you at your consultation.
Possible risks of brow lift surgery include:
- •Bleeding and haematoma (a collection of blood under the skin)
- •Infection
- •Wound-healing problems and visible scarring
- •Hair loss along the incision lines
- •Numbness or other changes in sensation of the forehead and scalp
- •Injury to the nerves that move the forehead and eyebrows
- •Asymmetry of the brows
- •A brow position that is higher or lower than planned
- •Risks of anaesthesia and blood clots (DVT/PE)
- •Need for revision surgery
Results vary between individuals and further surgery may sometimes be needed.
Your Results
Some change is visible soon after surgery, but the final result takes several months to become apparent as swelling and redness subside and scars mature and fade. Results are unique to each patient, so keep in mind that your results may not exactly match someone else's.
Results typically last for many years. Facial skin can eventually begin to sag again and sun damage will cause aging effects, so proper skin care and a healthy lifestyle are key to extending the results from your forehead lift as long as possible.
